Hollywood filming continued today at Snetterton for the Ron Howard movie 'Rush' (due out at the cinemas in 2013) about the intense on-track rivalry between good friends James Hunt & Niki Lauda..fighting for the world championship. The 1976 season had everything in real life..great racing, drama ( including Niki Lauda's horrific crash in Germany when fellow drivers stopped to pull him from the flames), controversy and off-track celeb goings-on when James Hunt's wife Suzy ran off with actor Richard Burton. Then there is the story of James' start in F1 which will be covered, with the Hesketh team run by Lord Alexander Hesketh.

Niki and James remained good friends until James' death from heart failure in 1993. Always playing practical jokes on each other. I wonder if they will show the scene when Niki burst in to James' hotel room in Japan at 5am in the morning of the final race, which would decide the championship between them? Niki was dressed in full race overalls, racing boots and helmet on, woke James up saying 'Today...I vin ze Vorld Championship' then walked out!

The historic racing world has been heavily involved in making this, in providing some of the actual cars and in building mock-up dummies with road car engines..some of these built in Norfolk. A lot of the old circuits no longer exist or have been changed so much..they can film at places like Snetterton and add in CGI effects afterwards.

Yesterday at Snetterton they were supposed to be filming sunny scenes of the Spanish & South African races from '76...but the weather meant a quick change of plan to the very wet Japanese GP finale at the Fuji Speedway..the race when James clinched the title. Unfortunately Mauro Pane aquaplaned off the main straight by the pits and damaged an original '76 Ferrari. He rushed home to Italy to get it repaired for the forthcoming Monaco historic meeting.
It was VERY wet..especially when Snetterton had added water in some parts as the director wanted more spray.

Fascinating watching them film this, can't wait to see it at the cinema. I was only there yesterday morning. Some of my pics:

They had two P34 six wheelers..original. The McLaren in the background is not off track, he is coming through the left hander 'Chapman' on the Snett 200 circuit. Filming ends at Snett today. I heard they are then off to Blackbushe again, before filming 1-litre F3 cars at Cadwell Park, which will be transformed to look like parts of Crystal Palace in 1970. Then on to Donington and other circuits, including Brands at the end of the month. All of the acting scenes are finished..just 'race action' to film now. Then all the clever post filming CGI effects.

Jag blev besviken! Dialogen var osannolika, och racingen var antigen animerat eller tydligen arrangerat.
Nej, ibland överträffer verkligheten även Hollywoods förmåga.
