Well, it's a little late, but better than nothing. On Saturday, March 8th, the legendary Nurburgring-Nordschleife was open to all who want to compete in the Ring 24hrs or the VLN, a series that runs a number of long distance races on the mighty ring. The testday lasted from 10am to 4pm. When I arrived shortly after 10am the first cars came to the Pflanzgarten section, the track still wet.

This year will be the greatest 24hrs race, but also the most dangerous. Cars from a Mini Cooper up to the M3 GTR (ALMS) and some very hot Porsche GT3, some with turbocharged engines. These cars are really impressive.

The white and red Manthey-Racing GT3 is probably the most powerful and has a good chance to beat the Schnitzer Crew with their 2 M3 GTR, only one present at the Ring with Jörg and Dirk Müller and Claudia Hürtgen. Visibly the fastest in the twisty parts was the GTR, but where acceleration counts (from Schwalbenschwanz up to the Galgenkopf) it looks like the Manthey-Porsche can keep up with the GTR. The Manthey car is said to have ~800hp, this will of course be reduced for the 24hrs, but can be used in the 3 or 4 h races of the vln. MAnthey himself says "Well over 500hp". Also the other Porsches are in very good shape, and if I'm right, the Schnitzer BMW has never run a 24hrs race. This will be very close competition.

But don't forget the local heroes. Edgar Dören has also a Porsche in his pocket, Johannes Scheid planted a 4l V8 similar to the M3 GTR in his M3, the Getrag Team trusts in the normal 6 cyl engine of the old (E36) M3, but highly modificated. Artur Deutgen won't come with his Dolate-Motorsport E30 M3 (ex DTM), but he will of course get a hot seat. Then there will be last years DTM cars from Opel and Audi and a V8STAR with Jaguar S-Type Silhoutte and a Roush V8.

I can tell you, this was really good stuff and if it is somehow possible come to the ring from May 28th to June 1st. There's not only the 24hrs, on Thursday (holiday in Germany) there will be lots of good "Markenpokal" Racing with Alfa 147 Diesel, Ford Fiesta and so on.

The ticket for all days is _36, plus a camping fee that varies from the day you come to the track (_ 35 if you arrive on Wednesday). I would advise you to go either to Pflanzgarten 1 (the litte crest with the uphill right hander) from there you can easily access Brünnchen and Pflanzgarten 2
If you put up your tent at Pflanzgarten 2 it's also not far to the Schwalbenschwanz and just some minutes to PG1 and the Brünnchen.

Yesterday was the first championship run of the VLN endurance series (10 races at the old ring!!!). They drove the short version of the GP circuit and of course the Nordschleife.

Fastest in practice was the ABT Audi TT-R (DTM) with 8:31min. Second place was local hero Johannes Scheid with a 8:34, just ahead of the DTM Opel Astra by 2/10th of a second. Jörg Müller in his BMW M3 GTR was timed last week with 8:32, but conditions weren't as good as yesterday. The ABT Audi didn't take part in the race, because the car is not yet a long distance car. Opel wanted to take part, but on the first lap the gearbox broke at the Breidscheid section

The race was won by Jonathan Price/Frank Stippler in a 996 GT3 RS ahead of Jürgen Alzen/Arno Klasen in another GT3 RS. Third place was the "lone wolf" Artur Deutgen driving the whole 3,5hrs alone in his Ex-DTM BMW M3 (E30 series). And hey, the V8STAR is fast, finishing 5th.

ok, two possible winners abandoned due to technical probs, but never the less. It was damn fast.
