M3 Challenge for F1-2002 by EA/ISI by Neil Walker
Installation:
You should have a full install of F1-2002, unmodified for best results. It will probably still work if you've modified your original install but if you have problems start with a fresh install. Double-click the installer icon and follow instructions. Install the "M3 Challenge" version first, then when that's done run the installer again and choose the "GTR2002 Bonus Tracks" version. Note that for this to work you must have GTR2002 installed - all this does is copy over the GTR2002 bonus tracks to your M3 installation. When running the installer you may have to wait a bit as the self-extracting RAR archive unpacks to a temporary folder. When it's all done there will be a shortcut in your F1-2002 directory that you can drag to your desktop and use to launch the game.
Recommended settings/changes:
- Graphics settings should probably be HIGH detail for your both player and opponents cars. MAX detail is exactly the same but with full-time 3D wheels, which you can barely notice but gives an FPS hit
- 21 AI opponents
- AI skill/aggressivenes 100/40
- Make your own setup! The default setup is suitable for somewhere smooth like Canada or maybe Imola. You'll definitely need to play with the springs and dampers for the bumpier tracks. Oh, and all the usual warnings about warming up tires and brakes - give it two full laps and work the tires hard before you evaluate how your setup is handling. Without this the tires won't grip well, and the brakes will lock up too much (since they warm up before the tires do).
Still to-do:
The AI is not finished. Probably the biggest thing that would improve them is to develop setups for the AI for each track (right now they just use the same setup). If anyone wants to develop these and release them, go ahead. I would recommend an AI setup that has a lot of understeer, brake bias moved to the front, and a suspension that can deal with bumps well. The AI seem to lose the rear end under braking quite a bit, so a soft, stable, understeering setup should help. New AI lines might help here and there too but that's alot more work and only a few people know how to do that. If anyone wants to try, I'd recommend narrowing the corridors at the trouble spots to keep the AI cars single-file and prevent them from trying crazy overtaking attempts.
Also the game.gdb file needs a bit of work to set the AI qualifying times and race times accurately.

Anybody who wants to modify any part of this mod, release patches, updates, fixes, bend, staple, fold, or otherwise mutilate it is free to do so. If you want to include an M3 from this mod in your own car set, go ahead.
